Below are Portuguese Man-of-War
The Portuguese Man-of-War is actually a colony of organisms which work together
as one creature. Its body consists of a mostly nitrogen gas-filled float and a
polyp, which is a translucent structure tinted blue or pink. They average 3-12 long
and can extend up to 6 above water. Beneath the float are clusters of polyps which
hang from tentacles up to 165 feet long. These lower polyps are responsible for detecting
and capturing prey, reproducing, and feeding. The "animal" moves by means of its
float, which functions as a sail. Portuguese Man-of-War are located around the Hawaiian
Islands but are typically encountered more frequently on the Windward sides of the islands
where the constant inland winds blow them close to shore. They are also blown to other
parts of the islands during the changing wind direction or high wind conditions. |
