The Honouliuli Preserve is located on the island of Oahu and stretches across the
south-east slope of the Wai'anae Mountains. The 3,582 acres where the preserve is located
is owned by the Estate of James Campbell. The Nature Conservancy leases the land in order
to preserve the contents which are the remnants of a diverse native forest. Within the
preserve are more than 90 species of rare and endangered plants and animals. The rare
native inhabitants include tree snails, happy face spiders, mints, hibiscus, Hawaiian
sandalwood, maile, violets, Hawaiian owl (pueo), Hawaiian flycatcher ('elepaio), Hawaiian
Honeycreeper ('apapane), and more! This area is not open to the general public and there
are three locked gates to go through to gain access to the trail head. The Nature
Conservancy offers two different guided hikes each month within the preserve if you would
like to experience for yourself this amazing rare ecosystem and the amazing views that it
offers. For more information on the future hikes offered by the Nature Conservancy on Oahu
and Molokai please visit their web site at http://nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/hawaii/travel/
Below are photographs taken when we attended Nature
Conservancy guided hike on the Palikea Trail 8/6/2005.

There was a haze in the air but we could see Diamond Head off in the distance with our
naked eye although it does not show in the photo
|
The above three photos show the Ko'olau mountain range.
This is one of two mountain ranges that make up the island of Oahu. The view show the Oahu
cental plain, Pearl Harbor, and in the distant haze is Diamond Head. The volcano on the
Big Island was quite active on the day this was taken which causes a volcanic haze called
vog to envelop the islands if the tradewinds are not blowing strong enough. |

| View from the summit of Palikea, elevation 3,098 feet. Kolekole Pass can
be seen to the right and Mt. Kaala, (Oahu's highest peak), is the flat top peak in the
center of the range. We were fortunate to have a clear view of Mt. Kaala, it is typically
topped with clouds. |
The above nine photos show the Waianae Mountain Range
which is the second of two mountain ranges that make up the island of Oahu. The flat top
mountain in the center photo above is Mt. Kaala, the tallest point on the island of Oahu
at 4,040 feet above sea level. |
